Big 4 strategy arms

The strategy consulting businesses inside the Big 4. How they compare with MBB, how they differ from Big 4 consulting, and how to get in.

Three of the Big 4 accounting firms have bought strategy firms and kept them as separate brands. They do work much like the MBB firms, backed by a much larger network.

Strategy arm Part of Came from
Monitor Deloitte Deloitte Monitor Group, 2013
Strategy& PwC Booz & Company, 2014
EY-Parthenon EY Parthenon, 2014

KPMG doesn't have a separately branded strategy arm.

The mistake to avoid

Apply to the strategy arm, not the firm's general consulting programme. They recruit separately, and they're different jobs. If you want strategy, say so, and apply where the strategy work is.

What's different about each

  • Strategy& used a structured written case when I went through it, in the same format as CaseCoach's practice cases.
  • EY-Parthenon does a lot of deal-related work, so a banking-style internship is relevant.
  • Monitor Deloitte works closely with the rest of Deloitte on big transformation projects.

Questions

Are the Big 4 strategy arms as good as MBB?

They do similar work. MBB has the bigger brand, but these are very good places to start.

Does KPMG have a strategy arm?

Not a separately branded one.

I worked at BCG and Bain in London, and at Bain I worked recruiting events and interviewed candidates. I’ve had offers from Citi, Bank of America, BCG, Bain, McKinsey, Oliver Wyman, Strategy&, L.E.K. and OC&C. I’ve since scored and marked up more than 175 banking and consulting CVs by hand. The CV review on this site uses the same criteria.
