Allen & Co. is a privately owned New York bank that advises media and technology companies, and it's known for being extremely private. It doesn't publicise much, but its name turns up on a lot of the biggest media deals. It's most famous for its annual conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, where media and tech executives meet every July.
How do people get in?
Not through a big public graduate scheme, as far as I can tell. Allen & Co. has a reputation for hiring small numbers of analysts, often through personal connections and referrals. That's frustrating to read, but it's useful to know so you don't spend weeks waiting for an application portal to open.
What you can do:
- Go to a strong US university's finance and media events, where people from firms like this sometimes appear.
- Build a real record in media or tech: an internship at a media company, a student publication you ran, deal analysis you've written.
- Apply to LionTree and the media groups at the big banks. That's the more reliable route into this world.
