Tier-2 strategy consulting firms

The strategy firms just below MBB. How they differ, what each is known for, and what your CV needs to get an offer.

These firms are smaller than MBB and do very similar work. I had offers from three of them, and I think students underrate them. Each has areas where it's as strong as anyone.

Firm Known for
Oliver Wyman Financial services
L.E.K. Consulting Life sciences and private equity
Kearney Operations, procurement, supply chain
OC&C Strategy Consultants Consumer, retail, private equity

Why apply

  • Very similar work to MBB, with smaller teams and often more responsibility early.
  • A clear specialism gives you a real answer to "why us?".
  • Interview practice. If you're aiming for MBB, these processes make you better at cases. Apply to as many firms as you can.

What the CV needs

The same three things the MBB firms screen for (leadership, problem-solving and drive), plus whatever matches the firm's specialism. A science degree at L.E.K., a finance internship at Oliver Wyman, a retail job written well at OC&C, a process you improved at Kearney.
