Technology consulting firms

The big technology consulting firms. What they do, who they suit, and what undergraduates need on their CV.

These firms help organisations design, build and run technology. Some also have strategy practices, but most of their people work on technology.

Who they suit

People who want to work on how technology changes a business, rather than pure strategy. For Indian students, Infosys and Wipro are huge graduate employers at home. For US citizens interested in government and defence, Booz Allen is a major option. International students should note that many Booz Allen roles need US security clearance.

What the CV needs

Something technical with a result: a project you built, a process you automated, data you analysed and acted on. Plus teamwork in big groups and the usual basics.

Questions

Is technology consulting the same as strategy consulting?

No. It's mostly about building and implementing systems, though firms like Accenture also have strategy practices.

Who wrote this

I worked at BCG and Bain in London, and at Bain I worked recruiting events and interviewed candidates. I’ve had offers from Citi, Bank of America, BCG, Bain, McKinsey, Oliver Wyman, Strategy&, L.E.K. and OC&C. I’ve since scored and marked up more than 175 banking and consulting CVs by hand. The CV review on this site uses the same criteria.
