Boutique consulting firms

Small, specialist consultancies that most students overlook. Who they are, why they're worth applying to, and how to approach them.

Boutique consultancies are small firms that specialise in one kind of work or one region. They rarely appear at careers fairs, so far fewer students apply.

  • Teneo, CEO advisory, communications and restructuring
  • Plural Strategy, London strategy consultancy

Why I'd look at them

  • Less competition, because most students only apply to the names they know.
  • Real responsibility early. Small teams can't hide anyone.
  • Good for your CV later. A strong boutique experience reads well when you apply to larger firms.

How to approach them

  1. Read their published work and find something you have a real view on.
  2. Look at where the partners trained. That tells you how they'll interview.
  3. If there's no graduate scheme, email them: five lines and a one-page CV.
  4. Prepare for case interviews anyway.

Questions

Are boutique consultancies worth it?

Yes, especially as an extra route alongside the big firms.

Who wrote this

I worked at BCG and Bain in London, and at Bain I worked recruiting events and interviewed candidates. I’ve had offers from Citi, Bank of America, BCG, Bain, McKinsey, Oliver Wyman, Strategy&, L.E.K. and OC&C. I’ve since scored and marked up more than 175 banking and consulting CVs by hand. The CV review on this site uses the same criteria.
