Nomura is Japan's largest investment bank. Its European business has an unusual history: when Lehman Brothers collapsed in 2008, Nomura took over its European and Asian operations, including a lot of Lehman's London staff. That's why Nomura has a much bigger London presence than you might expect.
What to know before applying
- Markets is a big part of the bank. A lot of Nomura's London business is in markets, so think about whether you're applying to banking or trading, and tailor the CV accordingly.
- Mumbai matters. Nomura has a large operation in India. For Indian students, it can be a realistic route into a global bank.
- Smaller classes than the US banks, which can mean more responsibility earlier.
On the CV
For banking roles, deal work and modelling with numbers. For markets roles, evidence you follow markets and think quickly: a trading competition, a portfolio you run with an honest return figure, a strong maths or statistics grade.
Before: Interested in financial markets
After: Ran a £2,000 personal portfolio since 2024; up 14% against the FTSE All-Share's 9%, with a written thesis for each position
