Greenhill was one of the original independent advisory boutiques, founded in 1996 by Robert Greenhill, a former president of Morgan Stanley. In December 2023 it was bought by Mizuho, the Japanese bank, for about $550 million. Mizuho kept the Greenhill name for the advisory business.
What that changes if you're applying
- Greenhill is now part of a big bank. It's no longer an independent boutique, so it sits somewhere between an elite boutique and an in-between bank. Mizuho bought it to strengthen its M&A advice, and the combination gives Greenhill bankers a balance sheet to offer clients.
- Recruiting may run through Mizuho. Check whether Greenhill's London office recruits analysts under its own name or through Mizuho's programmes. Apply to whichever is open, and look at the Mizuho page too.
- "Why Greenhill?" has a new answer. Advisory expertise combined with a large bank's financing is a genuine reason, and shows you know what happened.
On your CV
If you've already worked at Greenhill, keep the name. Write "Greenhill (Mizuho)" if it was after the deal, so the screener knows exactly what it is.
